Our company continues to promote energy preservation and reduction items each year to reach the goal of reducing greenhouse effect and CO2 gas emission, our goal is to reduce at least 1% (Electricity reduced 9% in 2015, down from 2014; 7% in 2016, down from 2015)

Taiwan Region

The major energy used by Darfon’s Taiwan factories includes electricity while various energy consumption reduced 55.69% annually to 2016, mainly due to shifting of Tainan factory production capacity to Suzhou Plant. The major energy used by Darfon’s China factories includes electricity while various energy consumption increased 7.71% annually to 2016, mainly due to shifting of Tainan factory production capacity to Suzhou Plant. Greenhouse Gas Inventory

Our company’s global production sites all obtained third party ISO 14064-1 greenhouse gas inventory certificate since 2010. Each year, we also launch various energy-preservation and carbon reduction projects, striving to reduce the greenhouse gas emission volume at the sites. We set 2014 as the base year of greenhouse gas emission, we aims to reduce greenhouse effect CO2 emission volume of more than 1% than the volume in the previous year. According to the data of greenhouse gas inventory, most greenhouse gas emission source is Scope 2 (indirect energy electricity emission).

Taiwan Region

Daron uses major energy used by its Taiwan region (including electricity, gasoline and natural gas) to calculate greenhouse gas emission. In 2016, the emission in the region reached around 6,161.68 ton/CO2e, down 52.44% from that in 2015, with carbon emission reducing 60.78% from that in 2014. The CO2 greenhouse gas emission reduced 9,547.21 ton/CO2e from 2014 to 2016.

China Region

Daron uses major energy used by its China region (including electricity, gasoline and natural gas) to calculate greenhouse gas emission. In 2016, the emission in the region reached around83,125.23 ton/CO2e, up 7.06% from that in 2015, with carbon emission increasing 1.57% from that in 2014. The CO2 greenhouse gas emission increased 1,281.29 ton/CO2e from 2014 to 2016.

Overall, Darfon’s factories in Taiwan and China had greenhouse gas emission of around 89,286.91 ton/CO2e in 2106, down 1.45% from that in 2015; down 8.47% from that in 2014. The overall greenhouse gas emission reduced 8,265.92 ton/CO2e from 2014 to 2016.
Energy Preservation and Carbon Reduction Measures
There is Only One Earth, Energy Preservation and Environmental Protection are the Long-Term Goal and Responsibilities of all Darfon Employees!

Darfon completed global production site greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory information statistics in 2011, with the sites finished third-party greenhouse gas inventory verification (ISO14064-1) in 2012, and its Taoyuan headquarter in 2014, which is also the base year of greenhouse gas emission for the reference of inventory statistics for energy management. The company strives to promote improvements of energy and resource consumption structure at the sites, broadcasting energy preservation and carbon reduction while reducing the volume of consuming energy and resources. In the beginning of 2014, Darfon won recognition of Environmental Protection Administration, Executive Yuan, out of more than 400 competing companies and won the honor of “Energy Preservation, Carbon Reduction Excellence Award”, showing efforts in protecting the Earth and human being.

Darfon Energy Preservation, Environmental Protection Action 1: Oil-Saving Battle

Around 22.24 KGs CO2 are emitted out of each litter of gasoline, 2.7 KGs CO2 for diesel; the global average emission of CO2 per person is 3.9 tons; that in Taiwan is 11.9, ranking 22 globally.

As warriors of environmental protection, Darfon employees should note the following reminders when driving car for business trips:
  • Shared ride/ We encourage shared ride for our employees if in the same region or having the same destination, increasing the efficiency of using company cars.
  • Long-term business trip using mass transportation/ Driving car on business trips between northern and southern Taiwan is tiresome, we suggest use of bus or train, both comfortable and granting time for nap
  • Reduce idle time / Avoid having the car idle for a long time, this saves money and helps care for the Earth
  • Appropriate level of air conditioning / Except for hot days, avoid turning air conditioning to the maximum level, a small action can improve oil efficiency
Darfon Energy Preservation, Environmental Protection Action 2:Electricity-Saving and Carbon Reduction Go!Go!Go!

According to the electricity emission coefficient distributed by Taiwan Power Company, one kWh saved can reduce 0.528 KGs of CO2 emission! Darfon performs electricity-saving, carbon reduction movement to care for the resources of the Earth.

  • 1.For lighting preservation, each factory of Darfon has adjusted its lighting appropriately.

  • 2.All Darfon employees should follow the following items at their best:
    • When leave work/no one stays, switch off office area air-conditioning and lighting / Before leaving work, close PC and electric equipment no longer in use
    • Due to employee safety and energy-preservation, except for accompanying goods to be shipped, no staff is allowed to ride the freight elevator. / Reduce use of personal electric items not for business use
    • Respond to the movement of switching off light during the one-hour lunch break, all lighting is switched off for the one-hour lunch-break/ No use of non-office use electric items that consume much electricity such as electric boiler
    • Close light, air-conditioning, equipment such as soldering iron, testing instrument when leaving work/ Switch off equipment such as ventilator and air-compressor for laboratories during lunch breaks and non-business hours
Darfon Energy Preservation, Environmental Protection Action 3: Paper Preservation

When the tree is undergoing photosynthesis, it absorbs CO2 and releases O2, In other words, it takes away the CO2 (greenhouse gas) we exhale while making O2 on which lives depend; leaves can adhere dust and pollutants, having functions of filtering and cleansing air. Hence, tree are lungs of the Earth. The fewer papers consumed, the more forests are kept for creating O2 and cleansing the air.

Darfon spares no effort in the issue of energy preservation and environmental protection, especially for printing paper—the indispensable office supply. For effectively increasing the paper usage efficiency and lowering unnecessary waste when printing is required, we ask employees to use double-sided printing while providing the following principles for our employees in the hope that they can dramatically increase the efficiency of paper usage.

Darfon Energy Preservation, Environmental Protection Action 4: Pottery Cup in Meeting Rooms

With 50KGs papers preserved, a tree of 20 years can be spared, preserving paper allows room for breath for the Earth. Responding to preserving energy and reducing wastes, Darfon’s Taoyuan headquarter stopped using one-time paper cups and provided meeting-room-use pottery mugs at the water dispenser on each floor since June, 2008.

Darfon Energy Preservation, Environmental Protection Action 5: Limited Daily Provision of Towel Paper

The Taoyuan headquarter of Darfun limited the daily provision of towel paper each floor since June, 2015 to effectively control living expense costs. No more supplement will be provided if daily quota is reached.

Reminders for Darfon employees:
  1. Only one towel paper per round of hand-washing; use it to the full extent before tossing it to the trash can.
  2. Encourage employees to bring their own handkerchiefs to reduce usage of towel papers and care for the Earth by preserving energies.
Reduction Results

Our company continues to promote measures of energy preservation and waste reduction for the goal of reducing greenhouse gas CO2 emission. Each year, we compile related greenhouse gas reduction project and regularly review and improve ourselves during internal management meetings. Also, we disclose greenhouse gas emission and reduction information in Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)-related questionnaires. In energy preservation and carbon reduction, we finished assembly of solar cell alternator set at our Taoyuan headquarter in 2014.

In the results of reduction of relative emission volume of greenhouse gas, the volume of greenhouse gas emission each million revenues of global production sites in 2016, using 2014 as base year, were 47.79 tons, up around 5.29% from 45.39 in 2015 and up 5.71% from 45.21 tons in 2014. The volume per person per hour in 2014-2016 were 2.87kg-CO2e/hr, 2.82kg-CO2e/hr and 3.25kg-CO2e/hr, respectively. The volume increased in 2016 was due mainly to energy waste increase caused by the dramatic lowering of staff and production line automatic ratio increase in 2014-2016.

In the results of reduction of absolute greenhouse gas emission volume, the total emission volume of global production sites in 2014-2016 were 97,552.83 ton-CO2e, 90,600.68 ton-CO2e and 89,286.91 ton-CO2e, respectively. The volume reduces around 8.47% from 2014 to 2016.
